The overarching theme of our research group is the development and optimization of novel separation processes. We specialize in the design, study, and optimization of such separations processes, focusing in particular on water and wastewater treatment as well as the purification of biotherapeutics.
It is well-established that the global population faces substantial challenges associated with accessing freshwater sources. Due to resource overdevelopment and water pollution, experts estimate that up to 80% of the world’s population experiences a significant risk to water security. Even in water-rich areas of the world, there is still a basic need for effective and economical water management tools. As such, the design and optimization of cutting-edge water and wastewater treatment processes is critical to the ongoing health and prosperity of our society,
Similarly, with growing incidences of serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease occuring in the developed world, there exists an increased need to more effective, more economical treatment options for patients. As up to 80% of the cost of producing a drug is incurred in the downstream purification stages, the effective design and optimization of these bioseparations processes is clearly advantageous.
